The trucking business, or the movement of goods between locations, even across great distances, is considered as the strength of the Indian economy. Nevertheless, this comes with rough edges owing to the risky nature of the trade, whose level is highly determined by safety on the roads. Thankfully, over the recent past, measures have been instituted and developments made aimed at changing this trend, thus ensuring safe as well as efficient trucking.
The Current Landscape
India has one of the largest road networks in the world, with more than 6.3 million kilometres. It has a well-developed infrastructure for overland transportation owing to the rest of mechanised vehicular transport. However, this has also resulted in a high propensity for road traffic accidents. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, if the total population of vehicles on the road includes trucks, they constitute only 3% of this population but account for more than 25% of the road traffic crashes. These are shocking statistics, but the industry is preparing its people for the worst in as far as safety management is concerned.
Technological Innovations
There are various factors that have contributed to making truck driving safer, but science and technology overtake all of them. The minute the fleet management systems were introduced, a need for different technologies like GPS and telematics to monitor and track the vehicles in real time became a reality. This way, fleet managers are able to assess the practices and behaviour of the drivers and their work efficiency and take corrective action whenever appropriate. For instance, it has alerts relating to overspeeding, hard braking, and hard acceleration, with the aim of discouraging such behaviour from the drivers in an attempt to reduce the risk of accidents
Regulatory Measures and Training
Furthermore, the Government of India has initiated measures aimed at enhancing the safety of the trucking business. Motor Vehicle Amendment 2019 is one such law that incorporates clauses increasing fines for certain road traffic violations with the objective of encouraging discipline among motorists. This is in addition to the development of more severe regulations on the issuance of licenses to drivers of commercial motor vehicles in the effort to encourage training and retraining of drivers.
Infrastructure Development
Technological advancement and regulatory improvements alone cannot bring about safety enhancements; there are aspects such as infrastructure development that are very central. On road safety, the government has put a lot of budgets into projects like better signs, proper lighting, and even providing separate lanes for the trucks. Projects like the National Highways Development Project aim at constructing better and safer transport corridors.
Community Engagement and Awareness
In conclusion, the role of community involvement is unique and important in building a road safety culture. It is important to conduct the awareness campaigns for the truck drivers, the general public, and all the people too, for the purpose of changing the perception of those people towards road safety. Campaigns that advocate for traffic law compliance and responsible attitudes can help lower the incidence of road crashes.
Conclusion
The trucking sector in India is in the process of rapid transformation geared toward ensuring safety on the roads for all. Thanks to technological advancements, tough laws, better construction networks, and sensitisation, the outlook is positive. With such developments in place, there is optimism that not only will India’s logistics improvement be at its best but that also the safety of the busy roads will be achievable. The distance may seem far, but it is possible with working together; all will travel safely.
