Indeed, in the recent years, the uncertainties introduced by climate change have continued to be unprecedented challenges to the Indian trucking industry. It threatens to affect not just the cost-effectiveness of operations but also the safety and livelihood conditions of truck drivers. The current scenario blames all erratic climatic behaviour, which is presently prima facie established and necessitates trucking to adapt to keeping life continuity and resilience.
The meteorological events such as heavy rain, flooding, and heat waves have increasingly grown to be considered extreme in the country and have aggravated the situation even more concerning points in transport. Roads in rural and remote areas tend to be the most poorly managed. The effect of all of this comes during monsoons when the road experiences flooding and landslides that cause long delays, increase maintenance, and bring other dangers to roads. These conditions, on their own, create hazardous infrastructure, and thus it becomes quite difficult to maintain the rural roads such that they serve during all these adverse conditions. Exposure to overlong years of heatwaves has been attributed to the destruction of road surfaces and thereby the overheating of vehicles.
Much health-related hazards truck drivers are experiencing these days, thanks to these changes. Heat sickness, dehydration, and exhaustion are common phenomena for long truck trips through waterlogged areas under very high temperatures during harsh summers. This complication adds to the already gruelling profession.
Moreover, changing weather conditions affect the safety and quality of cargo. Delays resulting from such weather disruptions are particularly harmful to perishable commodities such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy because they hasten spoilage. This would then lay the ground not only for financial losses but also for the decline of credibility between suppliers and customers.
There is the need for the trucking company to incorporate adaptive strategies because of the extreme challenges it faces. So, investment in all-weather roads and improved infrastructural development within vulnerable areas is a key need. All vehicles also need to have advanced mechanisms, including weather tracking, improved coolers, and the like, to withstand the extreme conditions for operations. Training of the driver will also involve those conditions with safe thoughts in their minds.
With the collaboration of policymakers and industry stakeholders, long-term solutions for climate resilience must be established. Sustainable practices such as switching to cleaner fuels will enable the use of energy-efficient vehicles to reduce truck-related environmental impacts and thus contribute to climate change over time.
